Winning the interview game: Essential tactics for a long-lasting impression

If you believe that having good grades and skills is enough to succeed in an interview, you are wrong. You confidently walk into the room thinking you know everything about the job and you will win that job, there’s more likely an important aspect that you may have overlooked. It’s not just about what you know about the work, it is how you convince the interviewer that you are the best fit for the company.

To some extent, it’s true that your performance in the interview greatly influences your chances of being selected. Now, how you perform in that brief moment depends on the research you have done before going for the interview and sticking to your planned interview approach.

So, before you step into the room, here are some essential things to keep in mind.

1. Do your homework
Before your interview, it’s important to do your homework on three key elements: the company, the job description, and the interviewer.

Take time to gather information about the company’s services, products, and overall mission. You can contact current employees for genuine insights and helpful tips. Customise your resume to align with the specific requirement mentioned in the job description. Be prepared to discuss and demonstrate your relevant skills and experience to the position.

Additionally, try to find out who will be interviewing you and gather background information about them. This knowledge can help you establish a connection with the interviewer by discussing a suitable topic that breaks the ice and makes the conversation more comfortable.

2. First impression matters
Making a lasting impression in an interview relies heavily on how you make your first impression. When it comes to online interviews, it is relatively easier, but you should still pay attention to your camera, internet connection, microphone, and lighting. Remember to maintain eye contact with the camera, but avoid staring too intensely. It is acceptable to discreetly have some notes taped to your computer in case you need assistance or feel stuck.

For in-person interviews, two things are crucial. First, ensure that you are punctual by checking the commute in advance. Second, dress appropriately for the occasion. When you arrive at the office building, walk confidently and show respect to those you encounter. Upon meeting your interviewer, express gratitude by saying something like, “Thank you for extending this interview opportunity to me. It is a genuine privilege to be considered for such a significant role, and I am truly grateful for the chance to be a part of your team.”

3. Copy the same style of communication
People tend to prefer hearing things that match their own interests and communication style. That is why it can be effective to mirror the interviewer’s style of talking during the conversation. Additionally, using the interviewer’s name during the interaction can make the conversation more impactful, as everyone appreciates hearing their own name and you can create a more engaging and impressive interaction.

4. Focus on interviewer
Feeling nervous during an interview is completely normal, and it can sometimes lead to unconscious movements or fidgeting. Your leg may start shaking, your hands might tremble, or you may find yourself playing with your fingers. Try to get a grip on your fingers, hand, and eyes while conversing with the interviewer. Take a deep breath and calm yourself. It’s important to remember that the priority during the interview is the interviewer and their words. So, try your best to let go of any distractions and attentively focus on the person sitting in front of you, i.e., the interviewer and their questions.

5. Show your interest
All hiring managers first see your interest before your competency. It takes time and energy to hire so they are also not interested in rejecting you but they want to check whether you are ready to make it or not. In essence, it is important to convey to the interviewer that you genuinely desire the job and are eager to contribute to the company’s success.

6. Be authentic
There are two things you should avoid during an interview. First, refrain from speaking negatively about your previous boss or employer. It’s important to maintain a professional demeanour and avoid any negative comments or criticism.

Secondly, avoid exaggerating or embellishing your achievements. While it’s essential to showcase your skills and qualifications, this is equally important to provide accurate and truthful information about your past achievements. Be confident and proud of your accomplishments while discussing them with your interviewer.

7. How to end the game
It is indeed beneficial to come prepared with thoughtful questions and a memorable closing statement. Asking natural questions can help lighten up the atmosphere and make the interview more engaging. Don’t forget to clearly express your desire to be selected for the opportunity.
